We were very lucky to speak with Colin ad his father Jon Cyr. Jon Cyr created the Young Vikings Club earlier this year with the goal of giving a Boy Scout like experience to Asatru kids. The feel is similar but with quite a few Asatru friendly twists. Take a listen …. maybe you’ll be encouraged to mentor a Young Viking!

We are back from the East Coast Thing 2009 and thrilled to present to you one of the many great classes. Tanya Peterson is a member of this year’s hosting kindred, Gladsheim. She presented a class on Hospitality, that we thought was excellent and worthy of a listen. She uses the Havamal to break down modern ethics concerning how to be a good guest, a good host as well as appropriate internet and every day hospitality.

Many thanks to Tanya for letting us record her class.

This is our first videocast. And we do apologize for both the quality and timeliness of this. But it is about 45 minutes of goodness telling the saga of what it took to create a place for our honored dead. It was recorded at the International Asatru Summer Camp July 2009.

The description from the pre-event newsletter, “Solvej Vikkelsø will be talking about creating a heathen burial ground. Solvej is a member of Danish Forn Siðr and the one who has all the photos, plans, architect drawings and others things in digital form of the burial place of Forn Siðr in Odense - Søren Fisker and Solvej Vikkelsø are the ones who did all the planning and work up to and including the actual making of the stone-ship (skibssætning). In other words, Solvej knows exactly what she is talking about when she tells you what it took for Forn Siðr to have their own heathen burial ground.”

Rest assured, we will be podcasting more goodies from IASC.

But not too soon as the end of August is time for the East Coast Allthing! Hope to see you there and we will bring back more good stuff from that event as well.

In this months Ravencast we interview Joe Mandato. Joe is a long standing member of the Northeast Community in general and of Vingolf Fellowship in particular as well as the moderator for the Northeast Asatru Yahoo Group. I know that Joe’s very special connection to Skathi came through vividly in this cast and I’m certain you will as well. Joe mentions a link to a website where you can see some poetry written by him and others to Skathi (http://www.geocities.com/~vingolf/skadave/poetry.html)

Ann Sheffield was very gracious to join us to speak about her research on Frey. Ann is a long standing member of the Northeast US Asatru community and well known for her detailed scholarship. She wrote a book about her research on Frey called “Frey, God of the World“. Our discussion focuses on how Frey is much more than a fertility god. Ann references Viga-Glum’s Saga, Heimskringla, and Skirnismal as starting points for her research as well as the website http://www.heimskringla.no/enindex.php. We hope you find this interview as enlightening as we did!

See you next month and Merry Yule!!!!

We greatly appreciate every comment that we receive whether positive or critical. However, we will not approve any comment or respond to any email that attempts to debate the merit of Asatru as a religion. The discussion of Asatru is the entirety of this podcast.

We do not appreciate comments left that attempt to be divisive or in anyway stifle the constructive comments left by others.

We state this, not to limit discussion, but to clarify our thought process. Especially, since in the many months that we have been doing this a grand total of one comment we found inappropriate.

Sean has been part of the Asatru community for about two years. We asked him about his experience to gather ideas about what a “newbie” to the community has to say. Alot of very interesting points were made in our discussion with Sean so we decided to keep this episode whole. As a result it is a little longer than typical - clocking in at about 45 minutes.

Some of the topics discussed were Asatru community, the nine noble virtues, the idea of Asatru becoming mainstream. The poetic Edda and the Sagas of the Icelanders

We’ve also added some new links under New To Asatru. As the heading implies these are great links to basic information for those just starting.
