I don’t think one can generalize about “the religion of the Troth”. There are some very conservative heathens in the Troth, and some people who are not quite sure what they are. This is one of the functions of the organization: to be a place where people coming from someplace else can land within organized heathenry and get a look around. Some folks get their bearings and decide to stay. Some move on to other heathen organizations, or maintain dual memberships. Some just move on. And some maintain their memberships and their not-quite-sure-what-they-are status. For those of us who are definitely heathen, that’s annoying sometimes. Other times, it’s… well… colorful. If that’s not your cup of mead, that’s OK with me. The Troth is one of the growth points in modern heathenry. It needs to be here.

I enjoyed the interview and I really enjoy your podcast. I find the religion of the Troth to be very misguided and offensive, the wiccatru elements, the universalism, and especialy the fringe sexuality activism. All that aside, having members from the Troth and all other heathen leadership is very beneficial and is a great service to out community. Getting voices out there (those you agree with and those you disagree with) is very important and I get alot out of it, thanks

There is for the most part 5 of us on our show (Ron, Charity, Tony, Lisa, & Laurie). The time frame that we recorded you guys for the show Lisa and Laurie could not make it becouse thay could not get the night off form there jobs. But all in all great show guys as always.

Wow. This seems to be a back-handed compliment. Obviously this interview disturbed you sufficiently so that you did not listen to end. You missed me mentioning that the Troth has no hold on what we do. You apparently also missed the last series of ‘casts we did on all the National Asatru groups that we could find.

I will not give you nor ask your permission for an approved list on who we interview, sorry.

Clearly, we don’t agree with you. With this attitude, don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. We put folks on the air who have something to say about or on Asatru and are willing to be recorded. We have recorded folks who’s views we don’t agree with because we thought it might be interesting and informative to other Asatru. Perhaps our next interview will be more to your liking.

I understand Mrs.Paxon’s influence on modern paganism/Asatru. But wonder if you are going to interview other authors such as: Greg Shelter,Swain Wodening,Mark Puryear,Mark Mirabello and James Hjuka Coulter. Or are only Troth approved guest going to be allowed now? Mrs.Paxon’s dual involvement in the COG/Troth may not bother others, but in my opinion you are Tru or your not. Who’s next?Raven Kaldera? If this is going to turn into a biased Universalist/Wiccatru we love all Pagans please let me know.

Great show the audio was wonderfull. We use Skype our selfs when it comes to haveing guests on our show and have had only one problem where it shut down mid-recording, outside of that we have not had a problem with useing it. To Mr. Abell, I loved the storys even if thay was read rather then toled. I will be getting the books. Once agan you two, great show.

First off, I just wanted to tell you that I have greatly enjoyed all of the 101 podcasts. A hearty thank you on my behalf for taking the time to make them! They have been largely helpful for me, as I am (after a few years of dabbling in it) taking serious steps toward becoming a full-blown heathen. Your podcasts have helped me to take the right steps and not fall into dogmatizing and simply accepting information at face value.

As I listened to this podcasts, I actually found myself thinking that delving into kennings would be a fascinating topic for future podcast right before Dave mentioned it… which I found amusing From a newer heathen’s standpoint, the kennings have been a bit confusing as I have gone through the lore, and sometimes the different names of the gods have bypassed me and left me wondering who was actually being discussed.

Thank you both so much again for making such a wonderfully entertaining and informative podcast series!

I agree with Ingmar and what he said about the Armanen. They have nothing whatsoever to do with traditional Asatru. Guido “von” List based his “Futhark” on the Runes, but they are not a historical system that was ever used by the Germanic peoples and there for not valid in any way. Armanism is just as factual as “Lord of the Rings”, which is also based on northern mythology. List was not even a polytheist, he was a pantheist and believed in ONE god, with many manifestations. All you need is a great goddess and boom……your Wiccan.

I’m very happy to see more 101 podcasts. Thank you! And doing it on the gods is a great idea!

I also loved it that you said which editions of the Eddas you were using so that I could get them out and follow along. The only thing that would have helped me more with that would have been more references to the exact spots in each Edda (especially the Prose Edda) that were quoted — that would have helped me find them to follow along quicker. With the Poetic Edda, of course, it’s easier since you can quote stanza numbers, but I don’t know, maybe a page number for the Prose Edda or something.

Overall, though, it was a great approach and gave me a lot to think about and to read about on my own. A good 101 topic and approach! Thanks again!

i haven’t vowed to be an ásatrú yet, i´m still exploring the faith, and reading my book about the true stories, and I believe in all of it, i just don´t understand the hávámal, what i need to sacrfice to the gods, etc. i´ve made my own worship temple thing near my home. I’d like for someone to tell me how i can become a full-fledged ásatrú, and a simple understanding of the hávámal, if you know, please email me at darkk_secrets7@hotmail.com!

Great podcast!

As several others have mentioned, I, too, would like to hear some more about the gods themselves, not just the lore (which is always great), but some stories and experiences about their manifestation in the “everyday” world of the here and now.

Also, are there any Celto-Norse or Norse-Celtic Asatru (or some such co-mingling of lore and belief) organizations? Afterall, it’s through that “co-mingling” that so many of us came to be!

And, could you do a cast on elves … and the alfar?

I grew up in Germany as a son of AMerican parents, but my schooling, friends, and general life was all German. Germany has been under massive political reeducation since WW2. Anything even remotely connected with the Third Reich is not only taboo, but probably illegal. I practice Asatru. Europe is presently undergoing a massive immigration by non-European peoples. These peoples, mainly Muslims, do not integrate, do not blend in and generally create their own separate living communities. So, what does that mean for our European Mother land? In the name of ‘Diversity’, ‘Equality’ and other such wonderful sounding slogans, what is actually happening on the ground? Is this really a good thing? Is it really a plus for non-Europeans to be taking over our ancestral lands? Because that is what’s happening. Now, what generally happens when somebody opposes this trend is that they get tarred with the ‘fascist’, ‘nazi’, ‘right-wing extremist’ brush. That is political re-education in action. Asatreu, a bastion for equality and diversity….What does that mean? We are supposed to roll oever and let non-Europeans take over our lands? Wake up! It’s happening here too. The pc assumption is that only Europeans are racist. How completely naive.

Best podcast yet. Ingmar and Isa’s views on racism feel absolutely appropriate here in the states too. I listened to this cast the day after MLK day, and to my dismay, we STILL have confused members of our folk expressing hatred toward a people and culture that they obviously have never truly attempted to understand.

I thank Ingmar and Isa for coming to the US and expressing this voice. It is one that should unite we Asa-folk against racism globally. Imagine, Asatru; a bastion for the environment, and a bastion for equality and diversity.

Thanks again Dave and Sandi for bringing these strong voices to the US, and thanks again for the amazing contribution you serve to our community.

Without wanting to needlessly prolong the discussion regarding Armanen etc., just my two cents. Of all the people I have had the doubtful pleasure to meet (accidently) or read about in the last ten years in Germany who had any kind of positive outlook and/or were affiliated to Armanen-related organizations and/or practices etc., nine out of ten had radical right-wing political views and did in fact promote truly racist and anti-semitic agendas. Anyone who can speak and read fluent German should be able to do the maths him or herself, with just a little bit of research. The primary sources really speak for themselves. One really does not even have to be left-wing to have strong views about this. Ingmar knows what he’s talking about. I rest my case.

Yeah, thanks to Ingmar and Isa — as a Heathen German, I feel adequately represented. And thanks to the Ravencast team for presenting the two. As for bigotry, it appears to be a European tradition — and von List had his own peculiar share in that tradition.

Americans who find wisdom in the Armananen runes need not feel offended by Ingmar’s comments because they are part of an interview about “practicing Asatru in Germany”, and this national context they hold true.

Please consider, that the interview was about the heathen scene in _Germany_. The things I’ve said were targeted at certain German groups. Through my kinsman Steve, I’m well aware of the fact that there are people in the US who try their best to seperate the racial and esoterical absurd in Lists work from his unobjectable ideas. If people belong to these groups and feel unrightfully attacked, please accept my apology. I never had in mind to bash people from the I.G. for instance - How could I? I wasn’t even thinking of them during the interview, because we talked about heathen groups in Germany. If, however, some people feel I spat upon their “Armanen Brothers in the Fatherland” - well, then I maybe wasn’t barking up an entirely wrong tree. If people think, my knowledge on the Armanen business is poor, rest assured that I personally met people from the Armanen Orden and did enough reading not only of primary sources but also secondary literature of both historians and heathen scholars alike that let to my opinion. But as I said, that only referrs to groups in Germany who associate with Armanens. That’s what I was talking about in the interview, and I’m sorry if people feel insulted because that wasn’t clearly stressed in the interview.

Great Cast!! I have an idea for a show…maybe Asatru 101? How does Asatru relate to the science of today? For example, do you actually believe that Sunna is the sun and that the ecliptic path is no more than Sunna running from the wolf. Science has proven it to be gravity. How do we explain this?

I have tried to research this online but have not much on the subject. If not a cast, perhaps you could point in the right direction.

As the quote above insinuates, as people come to Asatru and what Asatru came from, people also leave for a variety of reasons. I would suggest that the topic of leaving Asatru and how that can be done(for example, if you have sworn an Oath to the Gods and Goddesses, some believe that you can be released from that Oath) it might be a good thing to talk about(if not as a full episode at least as a quick side note).

I can only assume M Dyer didnt really listen to what Heimgest said or else he knows little of what the catholic church is about as being an ex catholic I could see no fair comparison and I thought it was made pretty clear that their leadership is very far from resting on one man. It is a shame that when an organization actually do something positive for the folk, there are always those who look only to be negative. Robert T

Another great addition to this very informative series! To be honest, I’m a little sorry to see this series come to a close. One could subscribe to the magazines and newsletters of all of these orgs, and still never gain as clear an understanding about them as this podcast series has provided. Well done, guys!

Thanks for the podcast. To echo Fern Green above, I would love to hear you discuss the perpetual (and slightly annoying) question of race. As a folkish heathen I would be interested to hear the beliefs of people not born into an “Asatru race”, especially how it applies to the Ancestors. Keep up the good work.

I have enjoyed your podcasts. I would like to hear you talk about the Gods and Goddesses, and how we can work with them. If you are feeling brave, you could address the “hot topic” of race and ethnicity in Asatru. Another good topic would be womens’ mysteries. Thank you!

One of the things I would like to see is an Asatru 101 cast on the steps to beginning a kindred. You found the people, a core group willing to work together … now what?

As to topics on the regular cast, A discussion on applying ones lore knowledge to one’s everyday life. this might also be a 101 caste.

Perhaps some simple and practical “how to” do various aspects: surviving a formal sumbel, surviving a Spae session, how to do a blessing, etc.

Sveinbjorn is a potent and powerful influence to be sure. I think many folks lean on the American sources more than the international ones. (But that is their loss.)

Heimgest immediately gave his thoughts on Odinism, so there seemed to be little need to inquire further on that vein.

I am curious as to what you thought of Valgard’s interview…

Well, I’ll sound a note of discord here. I just listened to the podcast today. It sounds to me like Heimgest is attempting to re-create the Catholic Church on an “odinist” basis. All the orders etc. with one man at the tip of the spear. I think Asatruars would be well served to follow the example of Sveinbjorn Beinteinsson rather than the OR folks and their forebears. Rudd Mills and Ms. Christensen have no relevance to my heathen practice and I don’t count them as influences at all. I doubt Sveinbjorn did either.

Why didn’t you ask him what he believes “Odin’s Nation” is?

A big thanks to you guys for this series, I just found out about it from a buddy and listened to them all, and have to agree with Heimgest in the interview you did with him, that this is a great resource for all the heathen, Odinist, Asatru community. I have been practicing for about 15 years now and the first guys I heard of were Heimgest, Steve McNallen and then Valgard but I have never met them so it was very good to actually hear them and as has been said listen to the differences in their personalities and way of expressing things as well as the differences in the groups. These guys have all been about since the 1970`s and its good they are still out there doing it. So a big hail to you guys at Ravencast for this project

This series on the national organizations is a wonderful resource. It is good to see past, present, future and personalities of them discussed.

Valgard Murray and Stephen McNallen were two of the first three Asafolk to answer my queries when I found that there were others who believed and gave worship to the same Holy Ones as did I. I have made many friends in Heathenry over the years because they, as well as the other leaders, did step out and say; “Here’s a life that our folk can live.”

Another great interview, guys. I’ve enjoyed not only what each of these leaders have had to say, but have also enjoyed hearing the differences in personalities between them. I think this series has not only served its purpose of giving insight into the reasons for joining a national organization, but has also shed a some personal light on some of the leaders in Asatru today. Those who have yet to have the pleasure of meeting some of these men and women in person, have now, at least, had an opportunity to put the sound of a voice to the writings of these leaders. Well done.

Studying is vital to build a solid base for one’s beliefs.

A plant does not grow from nothing it requires good seed in fertile soil to do well.

And questioning should never stop - it is the sign of a healthy mind.

The Northvegr Foundation Website is great, thanks for sharing this. I was just getting ready to purchase my own copy of the Prose Edda so I could highlight and take notes on the pages as I went (since the library in town probably wouldn’t appreciate this very much) and now I can just print it out!

Anon: Well, we used a new Noise Reduction filter for this podcast in particular. It’s great but it does make it tinny at points.

Previously, we were worshipers at the alter of the Levelator but the new functions in Audacity have made us quite happy. Keep in mind that we are recording straight from phone to computer. Not via Skype or such.

Feel free to send us tech thoughts or advice, as they would be greatly appreciated.
