Boris, you are clearly a wise man. You are certainly someone who is worthy of respect and notice. Where can I sign up to be one of your followers who wear Nikes and await for the arrival of the Mothership that travels just behind Halley's Comet?

Don't ever cross my path, Boris.

And Boris, your Christian ancestors converted to the 'Jew God' about a thousand years ago. By your 'logic', you're also pulling a fast one. Get real.
More's to the point, who are you? What have you done for your local community? What have you done for the wider Heathen community? What entitles you to say who gets to follow the pre-Christian ways of Northern Europeans?

Dave on the other hand, has done incredible amounts of work, both in his local community and in terms of interfaith work. As for that local community, I don't think I'd be wrong in saying that were you to express those views around them, you'd find yourself going home missing a few teeth - THAT is how valued Dave is in the North East.

As Heathens, we are our deeds, we are known by our deeds. Dave's deeds are known, yours are not, you just look like some pathetic anti-Semetic snot tugging at the pant legs of someone who is a comparative giant.

Oh, look, Boris the friendly racist is here, clearly craving attention like a 3 year old. I've been "pretending" long enough to help lead the East Coast Asatru movement.

What have YOU done with your life?

Hail to those who do minister to the Heathens in prision. Yes our Faith is growing faster inside the prison walls than outside. Mostly because prison is the most racial place in the world like the good Dr. mentioned you have to join a group normally just to survive. I am in talks with the ladies who used to run the NATPKA (National Prision Kindred Alliance) to see what we can do to get this organization back up and running. Just because these people have done something wrong doesn't mean we should ignore them especially if they have paid their werdguild. They will have to settle their "karmic debt" for lack of a heathen term. I was told that our Gods do not forgive and that those in prisons should stay with kristindomr. This is outrageous! And the most arrogant thing I have ever heard in my life. The men and women behind bars deserve the same respect they do until they lose it. Forcing someone to live as an outcast was a death sentence in the days of old. let us not do the same to these folks.
Hail the prision ministers
Hail the Gods
Hail the Goddesses
Hail the Trú Folk

It amazes me as a Canadian that the erosion of the barrier between Church and State has gotten so bad in the US. Like the US, we have a constitutional protection for our freedom of concience and belief. Unlike the US, ours actually gets enforced. Nice to know the Inquisition is now running the California Penal System. The work this man is doing is amazing, but I am still unconvinced that any kindred is well served by a prison ministry. Let the outlaws find solace in the faith, pay their dues, and seek to rejoin the comunity under the standards of the outside, not the society of prison.

Here's a suggestion for an Asatru 101 podcast topic: what is the role of non-humans, non-gods (Aesir and Vanir), and non-Ancestors in the Asatru religion? That is, what about etins, trolls, dragons, dwarves, elves, oh my?

It seems as though others have already hit on the Japanese conception of a sun goddess, Amaterasu, and a lunar god, Tsukuyomi in Shinto mythology, but it bears repeating as an elegant example of another culture's gender associations with sun and moon being like ours.

I must admit that I hesitate in invoking Baldr because he seems to me to be very Christian-flavoured and I wonder how much of his lore has been changed/created post-conversion.

Also, your talk on Midsummer is inspiring and I've come up with a few ideas for this year's celebration while listening to your discussion. Thank you!

This was an interesting show and I think that augmenting the strict focus on Asatruar sources of content really worked. (But, I am may be biased because I am Astruar upon whose table Brendan drafted his book.)

There are ideas amongst other Pagan authors you might consider as worthwhile to introduce to Heathens, "A World Full of Gods: An Inquiry into Polytheism" by John Michael Greer comes to mind.

There is also the account from "Risala" Ibn Fadlan's account of his travels amongst the Rus (who were largely of East Norse language, Heathen and with ties to modern day Sweden).

§ 85. When the ships come to this mooring place, everybody goes ashore with bread, meat, onions, milk and intoxicating drink and betakes himself to a long upright piece of wood that has a face like a man's and is surrounded by little figures, behind which are long stakes in the ground. The Rus prostrates himself before the big carving and says, "O my Lord, I have come from a far land and have with me such and such a number of girls and such and such a number of sables", and he proceeds to enumerate all his other wares. Then he says, "I have brought you these gifts," and lays down what he has brought with him, and continues, "I wish that you would send me a merchant with many dinars and dirhems, who will buy from me whatever I wish and will not dispute anything I say." Then he goes away.

If he has difficulty selling his wares and his stay is prolonged, he will return with a gift a second or third time. If he has still further difficulty, he will bring a gift to all the little idols and ask their intercession, saying, "These are the wives of our Lord and his daughters and sons." And he addresses each idol in turn, asking intercession and praying humbly. Often the selling goes more easily and after selling out he says, "My Lord has satisfied my desires; I must repay him," and he takes a certain number of sheep or cattle and slaughters them, gives part of the meat as alms, brings the rest and deposits it before the great idol and the little idols around it, and suspends the heads of the cattle or sheep on the stakes. In the night, dogs come and eat all, but the one who has made the offering says, "Truly, my Lord is content with me and has consumed the present I brought him."

Good food for thought in the ways we see "mother." That's quite true -- how I think of my mom is a lot different from how I think of Mother Nature. Now that my mom is dead, I am perhaps more aware of how more generic 'mothers' -- Mother Earth, Mother Nature, Frigga -- do and don't fill that role.

As an introverted, not very sociable person, I appreciated your take on Skathi and Ullr, and how they as gods (and I as a human) can be valuable members of a community without being emotionally intimate or the huggy/kissy sort.

Thanks for this grand service to our community. California is really backwards in a lot of ways. I live in Ohio and there was just recently a final decision made in a lawsuit vs. the Ohio Board of Corrections. The Ohio Department of Corrections is now mandated to recognize Germanic Heathenry, Asatru and Odinism as a legitimate faith in all respects. Hail to you guys. And best of luck to Patrick.

*spitting out shoe leather*

We know. We have had technical difficulties in the form of my computer eating the last interview. I am throwing a number of computer programs at the issue, but it doesn't look good.

We do have another one in the can and it's being edited. That should come out soon, I'm hoping within this week.

This episode helped me in an unexpected way. My Sociology Professor stuck me with a topical essay on Seperation of Church and State. I acctually got to reference this Podcast in my Essay which just tickled me pink. Thanks to Pat for doing the interview on this overlooked subject.

Wow, Wow, WOW!!!! Just found your podcast a few days ago googling for further biographic info on Kveldulf since I seem to have misplaced my copy of Elves Whights & Trolls which has some(shame on me!!!), and my wife was asking me for some background info on him. I am thouroughly impressed with your offering and especially this interview. What a treat!!! I commend you for the great work you are doing in expanding the knowledge and the spiritual horizons of the greater Ásatru community. Hail the Gods and hail to you Ravencast!!! ;)

This was a great episode. I don't think very many people realize that Asatru is spreading faster on the "inside" than on the outside. I'm not sure why this is, but we will need to deal with new Asatruar who are coming out of prison. They will need to be re-integrated into society and that is where a large problem will arise in the next ten to twenty years. The more Asatruar commit crime the more they will blame all of us. Our religion will be blamed for the crimes. So it makes sense to get the people in prison on the right track and help them stay on it.

I heard about Mr McCollum's case several weeks ago, and did write to the governor, and the office of the attorney general. (I live in California.) I had not previously heard as much detail as was presented in this interview, however, which I found very interesting.

As a life-long atheist, I understand about being a 2nd class citizen compared to those of the Abrahamic religions. While heathenism is certainly distinct from other pagan religions, in this kind of situation it behooves all of us of minority belief systems (heathens, pagans, atheists, Hindus...) to stand together for equal treatment for all.

I have been listening my way through your podcasts; I love them and think you guys are great. In this podcast you say that you are moving to Maine! Freakin' great. I am a native Mainer and live in the Belfast area. Let me know where you settled, I would love to meet you guys sometime.
Thank you. Dave and Sandy for your comments. It is so hard sometimes. I was told by the Asatruar in my area not to go in to the prison because the people inside were not worthy to practice the religion. And the thing is that this ministry can really help people have a better life, either in prison for life or for when they are released so they won't re-offend. Now we need to get some more backing from national organizations so we can offer support to inmates who are experiencing discrimination.

I don't think it was so bad, just turn the speaker up a little. Joe and the people present had a lot of greatn things to say, whihc may seem very basic, but they have lasted the test of time so to speak and they have made the East Coast and Northeast community strong and the force it is today.

Sorry you found it so bad.

We do what we can with recording and editing to make it as good as we are able to do. I'm hopeful for more Skype recordings in the future, which come out beautifully.

I'm involved in starting a new kindred so was excited to see this topic. Unfortunately the sound quality was so poor it all just sounded like quiet mumbling and I couldn't make out anything he was saying.

If you're going to record lectures at this year's ECT for broadcast maybe you should consider having the speakers use a microphone.

Alwin,

I work with a lot of folks with Mental Health problems. It makes my week when clients succeed. But the last thing that I would recommend would be for folks to climb into a situation that would put folks beyond their comfort zone. Religion is an import thing. If you are going or creating a religious group it should be with folks who are compatible with you and can give you appropriate long-term benefits. If folks have Major Issues or Situations that are going on, then it would likely not behoove anyone (but especially a newbie) to get into that. That is the point I was making.

Interesting how this particular podcast gets so many negative comments. I rather enjoyed the self-deprecating humour, and do recognise the problems that are mentioned (being a Dutch heathen). Cultural differences coming into play, perchance?

Very slowly still catching up on podcasts, hence the late reply. This one episode has been getting my hackles up, though. Some of the statements made can be easily misinterpreted or overstated, and lead to blatant discrimination of people. The comments on 'crazies' for one can easily lead to anybody with any sort of mental health problem, no matter how well managed, to be outcast - even more so than they already are in todays society.

So here's my plea: really, really, REALLY consider your words and phrasings.

Wow, what a fascinating site. Shame there is so little info on Rosaring? Thanks Christine for bringing this to our attention.
Here's something to explore regarding the mysterious use of labyrinth designs - NYU's Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (NYC) currently has an exhibit of objects from the "Old Europe" civilization (3000bc-5000bc) which predates Indo-Europeans. These folks existed before the Mesopot. and Egyptian civilizations. The artwork, crafts, pottery, etc. on display are stunning and very advanced. The reason I bring this up because one large pottery vessel had labyrinth designs on its surface.

I was pleasantly surprised. :)

Being a longtime Lokean, and a short time listener to the podcast (started at the beginning a few days ago), I was curious to find out what the Loki episode would be about. It was very interesting to hear from a fellow Lokean who has similar views, and similar experiences! And who has given me a few other things to think about, points of view I hadn't considered before.

Stephen,

Then use the closest feasible weekend/time slot. Look, I believe that Sunna will return whether or not we "help". The staying up is for our spirituality and connection to the Gods. That is the important point. The chronology is huge bonus but better you do something then nothing. Your new year would truly suck attempting to look for a new job. Just make sure that you let them know that next year you will be working Christmas but get Yule off. :)

awesome. great source for a more formal blot construction. ive been helping to do blots for about a year, but without all the ritual theatrics. that's something i think can fill the void, you know? also being in an area devoid of a cohesive kindred makes it hard because i'm having to try and find as many old-timers as i can (two so far), and try and get more new people...

Hey David,

I lost the e-mail with your address so...

What would you do if you had to work the next day after yule? Meaning I can't stay up all night. My work will not let me ask off. I have only worked there for a couple of months.

Thank you both.
