In this episode we interview Mike Smith. This is the first of a series of interviews about magic and it’s place in the Asatru religion. We chat about Runes but also about their application and uses. He gives recommendations for authors, rune sets and what are cool things to do with runes (besides toss them down for divination).

Mike is the Jarl of the New Hampshire based Ulfar aff Jera Thoed. He also has a series of videos entitled What is Asatru? Mike is also the New Hampshire folkbuilder for the Asatru Folk Assembly. He also has a fair number of writings in various magazines and on the Ulfar website.

  1. Nice show guys. Mike is obviously a guy who took the old saying of “Asatru being the religion with homework” to heart! I enjoyed hearing his thoughts on the runes, and he shared a wealth of good advice.

  2. A great interview, though a little hard to hear (but headphones plus volume control sorted that). I don’t really go into runes my self due to the fact that I’ve still my nose in books trying to get grounded on the rest of the religion with the lore (though I’m mostly through the main sagas (and the edda’s of coarse)) and other books I’ve been recommended to read. So this was a very helpful synopsis of someone who has gone into the runes, thanks and keep up the good work!

    Regards Jonny

  3. I was really looking forward to this interview, but I have not been able to listen to it due to the poor audio quality (I listen to podcasts during my morning/evening commute, and there is just no amount of fiddling that makes this listenable in my vehicle). I’ll have to try sitting in a quiet room with headphones … if I can set aside that much time.

  4. It’s great to have a podcast about the runes, and I hope it won’t be the last. I’m wondering how much work with the runes the two of you (Dave and Sandy) do. Personally, the runes were my “gateway” into Asatru, and I’ve been studying both the religion and the runes simultaneously.

  5. This was a really awesome podcast and I really enjoyed hearing more of Mike Smith’s thoughts on the topic. Somehow when I had been getting the casts from iTunes, this one got skipped! It’s okay, though, it was wonderful and definitely worth the unintentional wait!
