Episode 13 - National Organizations - The Odinic Rite

In our continuation of organizational interviews we were very pleased to speak with Heimgest of the Odinic Rite. During the interview Heimgest touches on many subjects such as prison ministry work, environmental activism, and programs for children. We highly recommend checking out the Odinic Rite's main web page at odinic-rite.org from there you will be able to find information on many of these programs as well as a full list of contacts. You can also contact the Odinic Rite at odinicrite@yahoo.ca

Hello, I was wondering if there was someone I could e-mail to discuss where to get started reading and studying. I have been to Asatru Folk Assembly and the Asatru Alliance. My problem is just the multitude of online Eddas and Sagas. How do you know which translations are the right ones? Are there right ones? Maybe if there is a private way I could give my e-mail address to someone and talk to them, that would help. Sorry for the strange message.

This is a great outlet that Ravencast has built here. Thank you guys very much. I am glad that you two were able to do an interview with Heimgest. Although, unfortunately, it was clipped off at the end. Still overall it was a good interview.

Baldurjór-AOR, Hurm… We double checked Itunes and the copy off the site itself. Not sure what you mean. Perhaps your copy had a problem.

    Stephen,

The short answer is: you don’t know which translation is right. That’s why you read more then one, if your into it.

I love Hollander for the Poetic Edda but it’s both less literal and accurate then say Bellows. Check out the Northvegr site.

While not related specifically to this interview, but more to the series, I had a question. I know about Asatru only from your podcast, and I was wondering what exactly is meant by the term “folkish”. Sometimes it seems to mean family-related or insular, while others it seems to refer to race. Am I anywhere close? I know it might be a touchy subject, but I really just want to understand.

Thank you, Sandy and Dave, for a great source of information for those of us looking into Asatru!

A big thank you to Ravencast for this interview. It demonstrates all of the reasons why I joined the OR. I wanted an organisation more concerned with action than whether their viking garb authentic enough. The people I have the pleasure and honour to deal with on a daily basis are first class and an inspiration. This movement needs people who walk the walk and they can certainly be found in the OR.

    Keep up the good work.

ps. If Stephen would like to contact any of the addresses on the OR site I am sure someone will be happy to help.

    Ken,

I’m not completely surprised you are a bit confused over the usage of “folkish”. The word can be taken many ways depending on how a person chooses to define the word. You can learn a lot about a person’s view point in general by what definition they choose to use.

    Hope that helps :-)

Great Podcasts! Technical comment: Is it possible while editing your cast to employ some sort of bandpass filter to the phone interviews to remove high freq scratches and the low freq bumps? Thanks!

  • Ravencast

Anon: Well, we used a new Noise Reduction filter for this podcast in particular. It’s great but it does make it tinny at points.

Previously, we were worshipers at the alter of the Levelator but the new functions in Audacity have made us quite happy. Keep in mind that we are recording straight from phone to computer. Not via Skype or such.

Feel free to send us tech thoughts or advice, as they would be greatly appreciated. :)

Well, I’ll sound a note of discord here. I just listened to the podcast today. It sounds to me like Heimgest is attempting to re-create the Catholic Church on an “odinist” basis. All the orders etc. with one man at the tip of the spear. I think Asatruars would be well served to follow the example of Sveinbjorn Beinteinsson rather than the OR folks and their forebears. Rudd Mills and Ms. Christensen have no relevance to my heathen practice and I don’t count them as influences at all. I doubt Sveinbjorn did either.

Why didn’t you ask him what he believes “Odin’s Nation” is?

    Matt Dyer

    Oct 23, 2007 at 7:06 pm
  • Ravencast

    Fair enough Mr. Dyer.

Sveinbjorn is a potent and powerful influence to be sure. I think many folks lean on the American sources more than the international ones. (But that is their loss.)

Heimgest immediately gave his thoughts on Odinism, so there seemed to be little need to inquire further on that vein.

I am curious as to what you thought of Valgard’s interview…

    Oct 24, 2007 at 6:35 pm
  • Robert T

I can only assume M Dyer didnt really listen to what Heimgest said or else he knows little of what the catholic church is about as being an ex catholic I could see no fair comparison and I thought it was made pretty clear that their leadership is very far from resting on one man. It is a shame that when an organization actually do something positive for the folk, there are always those who look only to be negative. Robert T

This podcast (and all Ravencasts) have renewed an interest in me to learn more about Asatru (I am a member of ADF currently, but am looking for an Asatru organization to join). I was really impressed with this interview, and hope I can find a home among one of the Asatru organizations you guys present here. One can only hope.
